The Institute of Visual Computing (IVC) was officially established on January 1, 2025, as the result of a strategic merger between two renowned institutes: the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision (ICG) and the Institute of Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization (CGV). This unification brought together decades of expertise and innovation, creating a leading hub for cutting-edge research in the expansive field of visual computing.
Today, the IVC comprises a team of approximately 100 researchers who are dedicated to advancing knowledge and technology in all aspects of visual computing. These include computer graphics and geometry processing, computer vision and image processing, visualization and visual analytics, augmented and virtual reality, machine learning and deep learning, inverse problems, and medical imaging. The institute fosters an interdisciplinary environment that bridges fundamental scientific research with practical applications, addressing some of the most challenging problems in the digital and visual domains.
The IVC is committed to excellence in foundational research, forming the cornerstone of its mission. At the same time, the institute places a strong emphasis on industry-oriented research, actively collaborating with key industrial partners to ensure its work has real-world impact. This includes close partnerships with the research centers Fraunhofer Austria and VRVis, both of which are based at TU Graz, enabling seamless integration of academic and applied research.
By combining basic research with industry relevance, the Institute of Visual Computing aspires to shape the future of visual technologies, contributing to advancements that improve industries, healthcare, education, and society as a whole.
